It’s a tall task to put into words just how much you mean to me—and words are my thing. But today, on your 70th birthday, I’m going to give it a shot.
You were always there for Ryan and I, helping us grow up in big ways and small. Whether we needed a shoulder to cry on, or to help us talk through a problem, you were there when we needed you.
And you’re still there for us today.
You’re always ready for a chat, fixing a creaky door, or making sure I hang a picture properly on my wall.
You’ve taught me so many important life lessons, and instilled core values that have helped me succeed. I wouldn’t have had so many of the opportunities that I’ve had without you in my life, and I’m so grateful.
I love that you have strong opinions (as your email list of buddies knows very well!) and you’re not afraid to voice them. I love that you wear your heart on your sleeve, a role model for the rest of us to not fear our feelings. You’re the best storyteller I know (and they get funnier every time!) I have my favourite stories that you tell, and it’s always a treat when I get to hear them again.
You’ve always put family first, and made sure we had every opportunity to live the life that we wanted. Whether it was making a go of my first year of teaching in Fort Chip, or moving to Australia for a year—you helped me make it happen. Whenever I come face-to-face with failure, you’re always there to help pick me up, dust me off, and encourage me to try again.
You are the definition of generosity—you give to perfect strangers just as readily as a friend in need. You’re a true friend and confidant to many, as anyone can see by the outpour of love that showed up for this book!
You are the most affectionate Dad; it always fills my heart to witness the love between you and Mom. You guys are an exceptional couple, and we have been so lucky to have that kind of love in our home.
You are the most wonderful, kind Grandpa. It’s so beautiful to watch you and Mom shower Evan with love. He will be an even more caring, generous little man because of you guys (if that’s even possible??)
And most importantly, Dad, you lead your life with love, and not many can truly say that they’ve managed that. So let the fun times and adventures continue, and have the happiest birthday ever! Let ‘er rip!
